Carbon-credit trading set for launch

A local company is to list instruments derived from carbon credits on the JSE Securities Exchange SA before the end of the year, subject to approval from the JSE's listing department.
The concept of a market for carbon credits arose in 1997 as part of the international Kyoto protocol on the reduction of environmentally harmful emissions.

UNFCC press release: Russia decides to ratify the Kyoto protocol. Bonn, 30 September 2004 - The decision of the Russian cabinet to forward the 1997 Kyoto Protocol on climate change to the Russian Parliament (or Duma) for ratification will - if the Duma moves to adopt - re-energize international cooperation on cutting greenhouse gas emissions, the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Climate Change Convention said here today.
